Pam Conrad was born in 1947 and was educated at Hofstra University and the New School for Social Research. She began writing books for children and young adults in 1979, exploring theme such as divorce, alcoholism, rejection, and alienation. She won numerous awards for her 1985 novel, Prairie Songs, a novel set in Nebraska in which a family struggles with pioneer life. She died from breast cancer in 1996.
